Open the file, go into Cycles rendered view, THEN enable the modifier.
For a lot of hardware, it's probably not unlikely that Blender will crash when trying to view the scene in solid view or Eevee (and maybe even in Cycles). Cycles is the only one that can take advantage of the instances.
I've bundled a few Nodevember prompts together here, 6-sided is the hexagonal floor tiles, round is the spiral staircase, Red is the flower at the foot of the stairs, Green is all the plants.
This was fun to just push and push against Blender. In the end, the actual nodes themselves got too heavy. Not what they were doing, but to literally draw the nodes. Blender apparently needs to serious reworking to be able to handle larger trees.
This one is sitting at 4127 nodes including the contents of groups.
Have a play, tear it apart, and let me know what you thing!
